June 15, 2017

On May 4th 2017 the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant was granted a permit to start commercial operation of the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility, also known as the B1 ISFSF Project.

The Operational Licence was issued by VATESI, the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate after successful completion of the Hot Trials (Commissioning) of the facility. The Hot Trial tests were completed with 10 new storage casks which have been loaded and transported from the Reactor Units to the Storage Facility where operational processes have been inspected under real time conditions.

Director General, Darius Janulevicius stated: "Successful settlement of issues and intense pace with Project works maintained within the last several years enabled us to complete this stage before the scheduled deadline. We planned to obtain a permit to start commercial operation of the new storage in October 2017. We will work on the unloading and transportation of spent fuel stored in units 1 and 2 of INPP up to the end of 2022 to the new storage facility, however we could already speak about successful completion of the project".

Michael Higgins, Director of Xacom Project Controls added: "Xacom Project Controls is extremely proud to have been an integral part in the Planning, Scheduling, Risk Management and Earned Value activities that aided in the successful completion of the B1 ISFSF Project".

The B1 ISFSF Project is financed by the funds of the Ignalina international Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) administrated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IIDSF Donor Assembly consists of the European Commission, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
